STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Buttercups is a family-run Children’s Day Nursery set in a rural location on the outskirts of Mold. We aim to provide a homely, loving and nurturing environment where each child is encouraged to develop to his or her full potential. The Nursery is owned by Gavin and Diane McCarthy. Gavin is a qualified and experienced Primary School Teacher and is present in the Nursery from Monday to Friday where he is actively involved in all aspects of the Nursery operation. He is supported by Emma Jeffcott, Nursery Manager. Emma is qualified to NVQ Level 3 in Childcare and Early Years and has over 10 years childcare experience. She is currently studying for her NVQ Level 4 Early Years management qualification..

We are registered with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) to care for 54 children. We care for children from the age of four months up to starting school. The Nursery is open 51 weeks a year. We open at 7.45am and close at 5.45pm from Monday to Friday. The Nursery is divided into four separate groups:

Baby Buttercups (4 months -18 months).  We can care for up to sixteen babies in our baby unit. The Baby Unit is divided into two sections to allow us to meet the different needs of very young babies and those approaching toddlerhood. The required staffing ratio for children under 2 years of age is 1 member of staff per 3 babies/children. This ratio is always met and often exceeded. In addition, there is always at least 1 member of staff qualified to NVQ Level 3 or equivalent with at least two years experience in caring for babies and children under the age of two present in both sections of the Unit. The Baby Unit is self-contained, but the accommodation is flexible to allow the babies to have both quiet time and also to watch and enjoy the activities of the older children. Both sections have their own self-contained kitchen.

Buttercups Toddlers (18 months - 3 years). We can care for up to eighteen toddlers in our converted barn building. The required staffing ratio for children under 2 years of age is 1 member of staff per 3 children. For children aged between 2 and 3 years, the required staffing ratio is 1 member of staff per 4 children. These ratios are always met and often exceeded. The Toddler accommodation includes a spacious playroom, a wet area, a reading room and a covered sand play area. It has its own self-contained kitchen.

Buttercups Pre-School (3 - 5 years). We can care for up to twenty small children in our purpose-built pre-school. The required staffing ratio for children aged between 3 and 5 years of age is 1 member of staff per 8 children. This ratio is always met and often exceeded. There is a large open-plan play area, incorporating reading areas, a computer desk, a home corner, craft and drawing areas and space for general play.

The age groupings are flexible according to the needs and development of the individual children. Great care is taken to allow a gentle and sensitive transition from one group to another. This transition normally takes place over a period of several weeks.

We accept all children and respect them all as precious individuals, regardless of gender, race, religion, disability or culture. We believe it is important that the children have the chance to build warm and loving relationships with their carers and to be comfortable in the Nursery environment. For this reason, we have a minimum attendance requirement of 2 full days or 4 part days.

Buttercups has as strong focus on outdoor activities. We have a large garden for the children to play in and an adjoining meadow. There are two large, hard-surfaced areas, which are well equipped with a variety of wheeled toys and other play equipment. The children have their own garden, where they grow flowers, fruit and vegetables.

Buttercups has a dedicated cook and all meals are freshly prepared daily on the premises. The children have a well-balanced and nutritious diet, with a strong focus on fresh fruit and vegetables. Eating together is encouraged as a social activity, which provides a strong focus for the day.

The primary language used in the Nursery is English with some incidental and conversational Welsh.

Many of our pre-school children attend the local primary schools for part-time nursery sessions during term-time. They are transported safely in the Buttercups people carriers and accompanied at all times during the journey to and from their schools. Please contact us for details of which schools are currently included on our ‘school runs’.

All our staff have recognised qualifications and attend regular courses to keep their knowledge up to date. They also have a wide range of other life experiences, which gives them a mature and well-rounded approach to childcare.

We are keen to support local colleges and schools by offering placements to their students. All students are always carefully supervised and are supplementary to the required staff: child ratios.

Our partnership with parents is vital to the success of the Nursery. Parents are always welcome to spend time at the Nursery and to share in their child’s life at Buttercups. We produce a monthly newsletter, updating parents on Nursery matters, and hold regular Open Evenings. Parents are encouraged to discuss any aspect of Nursery life with us, and we will always try to respond positively and constructively to any feedback. We have a detailed procedure in place to allow parents and carers to raise any concerns or complaints and be confident that all matters raised will be taken seriously. A personal copy of this procedure is issued to all parents/carers in their detailed Welcome Pack. In addition the procedure is clearly displayed in all units in the Nursery.
